Why Your Teenager Genuinely Can't Fall Asleep at 10 PM

It isn't laziness or defiance — adolescent body clocks physically shift. Here's how to work with that instead of against it.
For a year I treated my daughter's bedtime like a discipline problem. Lights out at ten, phone downstairs, and still she'd be wide awake at one, then impossible to wake at seven. I assumed she was choosing it.
She wasn't. In adolescence the internal clock shifts later — melatonin starts releasing one to three hours later than it did in childhood. A teenager told to sleep at ten is being asked to sleep in the middle of their biological evening. Meanwhile school still starts at the same time it always did.
You can't undo the shift, but you can stop making it worse, and most of what makes it worse happens in the last hour of the day: bright screens, an argument, caffeine after lunch, or homework that runs right up until lights out.
What actually helped in our house: a hard stop on schoolwork forty-five minutes before bed, all phones charging in the kitchen — mine included, because a rule only one person follows is a punishment — and dim, warm light in the evening instead of overheads.
Weekends are the quiet saboteur. Sleeping until two on Saturday feels like catching up, and it does repay some of the debt, but it pushes the clock later again by Monday. Aim to keep the wake-up within about two hours of the school-day time.
And drop the moral framing. 'You're choosing to be tired' turns a biology problem into a character fight. 'Your body clock is genuinely against you right now, so let's protect the hours you can get' gets you a collaborator instead of an opponent.
The $17 billion settlement went to states. Your family's claim is separate.
Parents whose teenagers were hurt by Instagram, TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook or YouTube are bringing cases of their own. A short, confidential check tells you whether yours is one of them.
