The Tuesday She Almost Gave Up

On a sleepless night, Maya counted the small wins she'd forgotten — the first word, the first laugh, the hand reaching for hers. A quiet reminder that showing up is the whole job.

It was 2:40 in the morning and I was sitting on the bathroom floor, because the bathroom floor was the only place in the house where nobody needed anything from me. My daughter had been awake since midnight. My son had school in five hours. I had a meeting I hadn't prepared for and a sink I hadn't emptied.

I remember thinking, very clearly and without drama: I cannot do this one more day.

What I did instead of quitting — because quitting isn't really available — was make a list. Not a to-do list. A list of things that had already happened. She said 'more' for the first time on Sunday. He read a whole page out loud without stopping. Last week she reached for my hand in a parking lot without being asked.

None of those things fixed the night. The night was still long. But the list changed what the night meant. I wasn't failing at an impossible job. I was in the middle of a slow one.

That's the part nobody tells you: progress in parenting is almost never visible on the day you need to see it. It shows up weeks later, sideways, usually while you're doing something boring like folding towels.

So if you're on the bathroom floor tonight — make the list. Not of what's left. Of what's already happened. Then go back to bed, or don't. Either way, you showed up. That was the job.
