The 10-Minute Reset That Finally Calms Our Evenings

A small, repeatable routine that turns the chaos hour into something we can actually live with.
The hour between school pickup and dinner used to be the worst part of our day. Everyone hungry, everyone loud, nobody willing to start homework.
What fixed it wasn't discipline. It was a ten-minute buffer we now call the reset: snack on the table, shoes off, screens down, nothing asked of anyone for ten minutes.
The rule is that I don't use those ten minutes to interrogate them about the day. I sit down too. Usually somebody starts talking by minute four.
After the timer, we move in a fixed order: bags unpacked, homework out, then free time. The order never changes, so there's nothing to argue about.
It isn't magic and some days it collapses entirely. But on a normal week it has taken roughly forty minutes of shouting out of our lives.
