The Bedtime Routine That Actually Stuck (After Six That Didn't)

Same steps, same order, same time — the boring secret behind our first calm bedtime in two years.
We tried everything the internet suggested: the bath, the white noise, the lavender, the elaborate forty-five-minute wind-down that mostly wound us up.
What finally worked was embarrassingly simple. Three steps, in the same order, at the same time, every night: teeth, two books, lights out at 7:30. No variations, no negotiations, no bonus rounds.
The first week was rough. She tested every seam in the routine, because that's the job of a four-year-old. We held the line gently — same words, same calm, same order.
By week two she was running the routine herself, correcting us if we skipped a step. Kids don't experience predictability as boring. They experience it as safe.
The real surprise was what it did for us. Evenings stopped being a two-hour negotiation and became an actual evening. The routine didn't just give her sleep back. It gave us the end of the day.
