The Homework War Is Over. Here's What Replaced It.

Grace Lindqvist

We stopped fighting over the pencil and started talking about the day.

For two years, homework was the thing we fought about. I'd nag, he'd stall, we'd both end up angry, and the worksheet would still be blank at nine o'clock.

His teacher said something that reframed it: homework is the school's problem to enforce, and my job was to protect the conditions, not the outcome.

So I changed what I controlled. A consistent time. A cleared table. No phone in the room, including mine. And then I stopped supervising.

The first week he handed in nothing and had to explain it himself. That conversation with his teacher did more than a year of my reminders.

Now he mostly does it. Not always. But the house is quiet, and when he asks for help he actually wants it.
